In the fall of 2021, an acquaintance of Alex Norman, the founder of a cannabis apparel and lifestyle brand called Budega NYC, reached out to congratulate him on making a deal to open several dispensaries in Southern California. There was just one problem, Mr. Norman said: “It wasn’t me.”Instead, an international conglomerate had claimed the Budega name, which Mr. Norman, 50, said was a nod to the longstanding role of New York’s neighborhood bodegas in supplying weed before legalization. It was the first of a series of copycats that have forced Mr. Norman, who lives in Brooklyn, to decide whether to wage costly legal battles to defend his brand, work out deals to coexist or start over with a new name. Cases like his have played out across the country as states legalize cannabis and allow businesses to open stores and release products under similar-sounding names. Jessica Gonzalez, a cannabis and trademark attorney, said the trend will only accelerate if the federal government legalizes cannabis and companies begin competing for national dominance.

New York CNN —During his six months as Twitter’s CEO and owner, Elon Musk decimated its ad business, alienated some news publications and VIP users, and plunged the platform into a constant state of chaos. Twitter began reinstating banned or suspended accounts late last week including the comedian Kathy Griffin as well as Trump. The platform also reinstated the personal Twitter account of U.S. House Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene on Monday. Major brands HBO and Mondelez were Twitter's top two advertisers in the week before the acquisition, according to data from Pathmatics. Pathmatics data showed that the top 100 advertisers between Nov. 10 to Nov. 16 spent an estimated $23.6 million on Twitter, down from $24.

Twitter could be a new wild card for the midterms

CNN Business —For years, Twitter has been a leader in countering misinformation and protecting elections. But concerns are growing that tumult inside Twitter in the first week after it was acquired by Elon Musk could weaken its safeguards for elections, just before the midterms are set to take place. Musk promised not to alter any of Twitter’s content policies until after the midterms. He tweeted: “Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended,” and without warning. The shakeup at Twitter has turned the company itself into an election wildcard.
The coalition, dubbed #StopToxicTwitter, consists of organizations including Media Matters, Free Press, Accountable Tech and Color of Change. The group is now urging companies to pause spending on Twitter, fearing that widespread layoffs at the company could impede Twitter's ability to moderate content on the site. Twitter gets over 90% of its revenue from advertising, though Musk has said there will be new subscription offerings with premium features. Angelo Clarisonic of Media Matters said in response that the pressure on Twitter is coming from advertisers and not merely the activists. González said that when she spoke to Musk earlier this week, "he seemed genuine but his actions have betrayed his words."
